Canopy, a boutique, lifestyle hotel brand by Hilton, has broken ground in SouthPark. That hotel will be the first to carry the Canopy flag in the Charlotte area as well as in the Carolinas.
Hilton Worldwide Holdings Inc. (NYSE: HLT) and Charlotte-based Tara Investments are partnering to bring Canopy by Hilton to 6010 Fairview Road near Southpark mall, as first reported by Charlotte Business Journal last summer. That 150-room hotel is now underway behind Fairview Towers on a 2.8-acre site that's part of a larger property designated for development of a mixed-use project.
The hotel, expected to open in SouthPark in the spring of 2020, will draw design inspiration from the property's former use as a dairy farm, with interior features including millwork finishes, marble countertops and subtle earth tones, according to new details released by Hilton and Tara Investments.
The property's 150 guest rooms, which include 16 suites, also will give a nod to the surrounding neighborhood through handpicked furnishings and artwork to reflect the "architectural design" of SouthPark as will the hotel's art collection.
"The Canopy by Hilton Charlotte SouthPark is a deliberate focus on creating a hotel that is elegant and whimsical, filled with locally inspired energy," Amit Patel, parter at Tara Investments, said in a news release.
In addition, the hotel's "Canopy Central Cafe and Bar" will offer a menu that aims to utilize local and seasonal ingredients, with a bar program centered around signature-crafted cocktails, a diverse wine selection and local brews. Tastings of such beverages will be held nightly in the space, which will be open to both guests and the community.
As for meeting space, the hotel will house 9,000 square feet that encompasses its grand ballroom and smaller breakout rooms that can be used for a variety of meeting purposes in addition to formal events like weddings.
Canopy Charlotte SouthPark will include a "transfer lounge" for guests to relax and store luggage rather than offering an extended check out or early arrival.
It will also be pet-friendly.
An estimate of room rates as well as the cost of developing the project was not immediately available.
There are nine Canopy by Hilton properties currently open across the world, according to Hilton's website. Another 17, including the SouthPark hotel, are planned or under development.
Elsewhere in the SouthPark area, more hotel construction is in the works, including an AC Hotel at Rexford and Roxborough roads that just reached completion of vertical construction as well as a recently reported 175-room upscale hotel to be part of a mixed-use redevelopment project at the former home of Sharon United Methodist Church, located at the corner of Morrison Boulevard and Sharon Road. That proposed Hyatt Centric hotel also would be new to the Charlotte market.
